We have great news regarding our beloved Riverside “R!”
Decatur County School System has received verbal permission from Rice University, through their patent attorney, to continue using their trademarked Old English “R” for non-profit, educational purposes while a low-cost licensing agreement is finalized.
This decision allows Riverside—and all of Decatur County—to proudly continue wearing and displaying the Old English “R,” a symbol that has come to represent our school spirit, tradition, and community pride for many years. We will wear it not only with pride, but also with deep gratitude.
A special word of thanks goes to Hannah Wood Lee, whose time, dedication, and expertise made this outcome possible. Please take a moment to thank her for her generous efforts in preserving a long-standing tradition that means so much to Riverside High School and to our entire community.

As our new administration begins, we are committed to being transparent and open with our community. With that being said, we would like to inform each of you about an issue related to our Riverside High School "R" logo.

Recently, the school received a formal notice from Rice University and its licensing company, Collegiate Licensing Company (CLC), requesting that we stop using the “R” logo because it is their registered trademark.
.
Although this may seem frustrating or even a little absurd, our legal counsel has confirmed that the request is legitimate. Education attorney Chris Hayden shared,
“CLC is a legitimate organization and the largest collegiate intellectual property management company. The email checks out, and I expect it is valid. If we ignored CLC and they filed an infringement action against us, we would lose. There’s no way our usage of it would fall under fair use or any other infringement exception.”

This issue is becoming more common for schools across the country. Attorney Ben Torres, Tennessee School Board Association, also explained that this issue is becoming more common for schools across the country, adding:
“This is a topic that has started to show up more and more with high schools. We’ve even seen this happen recently in Tennessee, like with Cheatham County Middle School. The college may be willing to grant a license at a low cost, or you could negotiate for more time. But removing the logo online is the immediate priority.”

Attorney Hayden further explained why Rice University must enforce this issue:
“If an IP owner allows others to use their property without policing it, courts have ruled that they’ve abandoned it. That’s why Rice and CLC have to be aggressive in sending these kinds of letters, even to small rural schools. These companies hire people—and now use AI—to scan the internet daily to find entities using the Rice ‘R.’ And in this instance, they found you.”

Director Thompson and the Decatur County Board of Education are actively exploring our options, including:
- Exploring whether a license from Rice University is a viable path forward.
- Evaluating the financial implications of licensing versus rebranding.

This summer, three of our outstanding Decatur County educators—Penny Lindsey (Theatre – Secondary), Antonio Posey, and Alissa Gulledge (Secondary Instrumental Music)—spent a week growing their craft at the Tennessee Arts Academy on the campus of MTSU.

This wasn’t just any professional development—it was a truly transformative experience. From working alongside legendary music educator Alfred Watkins to enjoying a show-stopping performance by Broadway’s Norm Lewis, our teachers came back energized, inspired, and filled with new ideas to bring into their classrooms.

The Tennessee Arts Academy is the nation’s premier arts education training program, impacting over 200,000 students every year through the work of its alumni. Since 1986, more than 7,500 teachers have participated in TAA programs, reaching more than 3 million students. It's an incredible investment in the future of arts education.

Mr. Whitwell is no stranger to RHS—he’s a proud alumnus and former teacher who understands the heart of this school and community. He brings with him a wealth of experience and a strong commitment to student success. He earned his Bachelor’s degree from Freed-Hardeman University, a Master’s in Special Education from Arkansas State University, and is currently working toward a second Master’s in Educational Leadership from Bethel University.

With a background in special education and a passion for leadership, Mr. Whitwell enters this new role with intention and heart. “Stepping into this leadership role is something I don’t take lightly. It’s more than a title—it’s about being present, listening, and supporting our school family. I want students to know they matter, staff to feel heard, and families to know I’m here for them.”

He is especially excited about using student data to guide meaningful conversations and support academic growth. “I’m passionate about helping students believe in themselves. I look forward to working closely with teachers to create strategies that meet students where they are and help them succeed.”

Decatur County Schools is proud to announce Mrs. Amanda Keeton as Assistant Principal of Riverside High School.

Mrs. Keeton has dedicated over two decades to Decatur County Schools, and her experience spans the full K–12 spectrum. A graduate of the University of Tennessee at Martin with a Bachelor’s in Elementary Education, Amanda continued her education at Freed-Hardeman University, earning a Master’s in Administration. She later returned to UTM to obtain her school counseling license, a role she’s held for 14 years across Decaturville Elementary, Decatur County Middle, and Riverside High. She also serves as the district’s Career and Technical Education (CTE) Supervisor—a role she will continue while stepping into this new leadership opportunity at RHS.

Throughout her career, Mrs. Keeton has taught 2nd and 3rd grades, served as a school counselor, and taken on administrative leadership. “I feel that serving our district in K–12 settings has helped shape my educational philosophy and given me a broader perspective and appreciation for both administration and the classroom teacher,” she shared.
.
Mrs. Keeton and her husband, John, have been married for 20 years and have four children: Levi, Ethan, McKinley, and Avery. Education runs deep in her family—she is a 4th-generation educator on both sides. Outside of work, Mrs. Amanda enjoys gardening, farming, cooking, traveling out West in their camper, trout fishing, and reading.

When asked what excites her most about this opportunity, Mrs. Keeton said, “I look forward to working with our teachers and students to make this school year the best yet. I hope to continue giving back and making our schools a better place for everyone.”

🌟 Decatur County Schools Celebrates FCCLA National Success! 🌟
Decatur County Schools is proud to announce the outstanding success of our students at the FCCLA National Leadership Conference, held July 5–9 in Orlando!
Shelbie McLemore, Shiloh Monroe, and Blair England represented our district in the Repurpose and Redesign STAR Event. Their project, Granny’s Dream Attic, showcased creative ways to repurpose old dishes. They designed and crafted:

✨ A candle in a sugar bowl
✨ A mosaic picture frame
✨ A mosaic coaster
Their hard work and creativity were recognized with a Silver Medal! Ladies, we are so very proud of you and your accomplishment!
We would also like to spotlight FCCLA advisor Mrs. Lorrie King. Mrs. King works tirelessly to teach, inspire, and build a culture of learning. She is truly an asset to Riverside High School and Decatur County Schools.

TITLE: Bus Mechanic
REPORTS TO: Transportation Supervisor

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include but not limited to:
1. The Bus Mechanic is responsible for inspecting all buses frequently to ensure that they are in excellent condition and safe to transport students to and from the Centers, on field trips and for other applicable events.
2. The Bus Mechanic provides preventative maintenance, safety inspections and annual Dept. of Transportation inspections for all buses.
3. This position diagnoses and performs all phases of vehicle and equipment repair, including brakes, suspensions, drive trains, transmissions, oil changes and tire rotations subcontracting repair work to outside service providers after review with Bus Transportation Coordinator.
4. The Bus Mechanic ensures work orders are completed accurately and timely.
5. This position assists with mobile emergency services.
6. This position is responsible for replacing parts, ordering new parts as needed and testing buses to ensure they are working properly before they return to service.
7. The Bus Mechanic maintains records of maintenance on repairs performed on each bus.
8. The Bus Mechanic communicates with drivers to identify and address any issues identified while driving buses.
9. This position will follow established safety protocols to ensure personal safety and the safety of others.
10. The Bus Mechanic will attend trainings to stay up-to-date on new technology and techniques pertaining to bus maintenance.
11. The Bus Mechanic will participate in all ongoing and required trainings to include but not limited to Tennessee Dept. of Transportation (TDOT), agency trainings, etc.
12. The Bus Mechanic maintains a positive relationship with the families and children enrolled in the program and Agency staff communicating all applicable bus department changes as needed.
13. This position will act as a substitute Bus Driver as needed.
14. The Bus Mechanic is required to follow all established county transportation policies and procedures
15. This position must maintain confidentiality of all information pertaining to children and families enrolled with the schools.
16. This position works collaboratively with co-workers to maintain and ensure a fully-functional fleet of buses.
17. The Bus Mechanic attends staff meetings, in-services, etc. as required.

EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE: High school diploma or equivalent is required. Valid driver’s license and current CDL Class B with P endorsement, and S endorsement required or to be obtained post hire. Three years of automotive or diesel maintenance and repair experience preferred. Auto Service Excellence (ASE) credential preferred. Experience with DOT guidelines and requirements preferred. Proficiency in computer skills to include Microsoft Office products preferred. Analytical skills, excellent communication skills, the ability to work independently and meet deadlines required. Operating and driving knowledge of school buses preferred. Must be able to provide their own transportation to and from work and throughout the work day.

Work is performed in a setting with moderate safety issues. Travel to outside meetings, trainings, conferences, home visits, Agency sites, etc. This position requires sitting, standing, bending crouching, lying on back and moderate lifting. Work performed in the physical environment of a vehicle maintenance area.

Welcome to the Panther Pack, Mrs. Vanessa Stephenson!

Decatur County Schools is proud to welcome Mrs. Vanessa Stephenson, who will be joining Riverside High School to teach Biology this school year!
.
Mrs. Stephenson brings an impressive background in science and education. She holds a B.S. in Agriculture and Environmental Science and a Master of Science in Plant and Soil Science, both from the University of Tennessee, Knoxville. She also earned a Master of Education in Educational Leadership from Colorado State University in Fort Collins.
.
Originally from Long Island, New York, Vanessa moved with her family to a farm in Camden, Tennessee, when she was 13. After graduating from Camden Central High School, she followed her dream of continuing her education and traveling. Most of her 21 years of teaching experience were spent in Colorado, where she lived for 15 years after completing her studies at UTK.
.
Her journey in education began at UTK, teaching Soils courses to college students, which sparked her passion for helping others learn. Before becoming a science teacher, she also worked in the field—handling specimens from the Exxon Valdez oil spill and delineating wetlands in Polk County.
.
“Thank you so much! I’m excited for this opportunity and so happy to finally be home,” she shared.
.
Vanessa has a love for adventure, having traveled across the country backpacking and biking over 2,000 miles through Europe. Her heart has always been set on returning home to Tennessee to be closer to her family.
.
Vanessa and her husband, Ethan, have been married for 10 years and share their home with two furbabies—Millie Mae and Rudy—as well as several reptiles and amphibians that will soon join her in the classroom.
.
In her free time, she enjoys gardening, growing plants in her greenhouse, and restoring furniture for her side business, Lazy Daisy Design Finds.
.
Mrs. Stephenson shared: “I’m looking forward to the new school year, meeting my students and the other staff at Riverside High School. I’m especially grateful to be part of the community and to share my excitement for science with my Biology students. Go Panthers!”

Mr. Renfroe graduated from UT Martin with a Bachelor of Science in Secondary Education and also holds a Master of Divinity from New Orleans Baptist Theological Seminary.

He is no stranger to RHS—he previously taught here ten years ago before serving as the full-time Youth Pastor at First Baptist Church in Parsons, a role he recently transitioned into part-time while returning to education.
“I am excited to get to know the students and share my love for History,” Mr. Renfroe shared.

He comes from a family of educators and is passionate about helping students see the relevance of history in today’s world.

Mr. Renfroe and his wife, Torie, have been married for 13 years. Outside of work, he enjoys working in the garden, reading, and woodworking.

Decatur County School System is excited to introduce Mrs. Ashley McCann! Mrs. McCann will be joining Riverside High School as our new Freshman English teacher!

Mrs. McCann holds a Bachelor of Arts in Liberal Studies with a Minor in Religious Studies and a Master of Arts in Teaching, both from Christian Brothers University. She is certified in English Language Arts for grades 6–12 and brings over a decade of teaching experience to her new role.
.
For the past ten years, Ashley served at The Collegiate School of Memphis, where she taught high school Bible courses, 8th grade Public Speaking, and 8th grade English Language Arts. She is excited to bring her passion for teaching and her love of literature back to Decatur County, where her own educational journey began.
.
“I’m thrilled to return and contribute to the very environment that helped shape me,” Ashley shared. “While I’ve always loved reading, it wasn’t until my 11th grade ELA teacher truly ignited my passion for learning. She recognized potential in me that no one else had, and that experience changed the trajectory of my life. I hope to do the same for my students.”
