Decatur County Virtual Academy Spotlight!

_
We are proud to share an incredible feature story highlighting the success of the Decatur County Virtual Academy (DCVA) and the tremendous impact it continues to have on students, families, and the future of education in our rural community. What began as a response to declining enrollment has evolved into a thriving, innovative program that meets students where they are and opens doors that once seemed out of reach.

_
Director Melinda Thompson shared her thoughts on the program’s success:
“Students learn in different ways, and as a school system, it’s our responsibility to adapt. The Virtual Academy is one more way we ensure ALL students in Decatur County receive a solid, high-quality education tailored to their needs. We’re proud to offer a flexible model that keeps students engaged, supported, and on track for success.”

Dr. Amanda Creasy added:
“Dr. King and his team have built this program into something our entire county can be proud of. They don’t just educate students—they build meaningful relationships with each student and their families. That level of commitment is what makes DCVA so special.”

_
We celebrate DCVA’s continued growth and the dedication of staff who believe in every student’s potential.

💙 In Loving Memory of Mr. Jackie Brigance 💙

-
With heavy hearts, the Decatur County School System mourns the loss of Mr. Jackie Brigance, who faithfully served in our system’s maintenance department. Jackie was not only a dedicated and hardworking employee but also a cherished member of our school family and community.

-
A 1976 graduate of Riverside High School, Jackie gave his time, skills, and heart to the Decatur County School System. His wife, Mrs. Vonda Brigance, serves as Chief Financial Officer for the Decatur County Board of Education, and together they have been pillars of our school system.

-
Maintenance Supervisor Mr. Keith Dickson shared, “Jackie was a good hand. He said what he meant and meant what he said. He will be missed in the maintenance department.”

Dr. Amanda Creasy reflected, “Mr. Jackie was a tough old piece of gristle that you could hug and choke at the same time. But there was no one more willing to help with anything I asked, regardless of what it was. He’d get his boots on and work right beside me. It also didn’t matter who you were—he treated everyone the same, and I always loved that. I’m so thankful for his kindness and the time I was able to spend with him.”

Director of Schools, Mrs. Melinda Thompson, shared, “Mr. Jackie was always friendly and happy. He was a vital part of DCSS’s maintenance department and played a crucial role in keeping our schools running smoothly. I always loved seeing Mr. Jackie because he was the same every single time—steady, kind, and genuine. He was a great guy, and he will be missed.”

Mr. Hugh Smith added, “Mr. Jackie was a highly knowledgeable and experienced member of our facilities team. His work ethic and commitment were outstanding, but more importantly, he was a friend. He enjoyed life and work, and we are grateful to have known him. His kindness and dedication to our community will truly be missed.”

-
Jackie was more than a coworker—he was a constant source of laughter, grit, and heart. Those who knew him will remember his quick wit, his affection for animals, and his ability to face any challenge with determination and a sense of humor.

-
This is a deep loss for our school family and community. Please join us in honoring Mr. Jackie Brigance and lifting up his family in prayer during this difficult time.

-
Jackie, our friend—you will be greatly missed. 💙🙏
