The Decatur County School System is proud of anyone who pays homage to our Veterans — but no one does it quite like Decatur County Middle School (DCMS).

More than two decades ago, Mrs. Rhonda Mitchell began what has become a cherished DCMS tradition. Each year, the program has grown into a heartfelt and powerful tribute, showcasing the deep respect and gratitude our students and community hold for the men and women who have served our nation.
_
This year’s student-led presentation featured the DCMS band, choir, and color guard, along with touching student readings of poems and stories. A highlight of the event was the recognition and presentation of local veterans and their spouses, honoring their service and sacrifice.

A heartfelt thank-you goes out to all the students, faculty, staff, parents, and especially the veterans who made this event so meaningful. Special recognition is extended to Mrs. Amanda Salas, DCMS Counselor and event organizer, for her dedication and hard work in ensuring the program’s continued success.

Director of Schools, Mrs. Melinda Thompson, shared, “It was an honor to witness such a display of respect to such a deserving crowd.”

This week was a powerful learning experience! 🚭
Ms. Sarah Burleson from the Decatur County Health Department came to speak with our students about the dangers of vaping as part of No Vape November. Students got to see and touch REAL pig lungs—one healthy and one damaged by smoking—and even played a game identifying what’s really inside vapes. Thank you, Ms. Burleson, for helping our students make informed choices!
